PrintPainting

Katsura Funakoshi (1951–2024) created serene, introspective figures through a distinctive technique: carving half-length busts from camphor wood, applying color, and inlaying eyes made of glass. His works, marked by a quiet presence and profound spirituality, earned high acclaim both in Japan and abroad, establishing him as one of the country's foremost contemporary sculptors. Beyond sculpture, Funakoshi also devoted himself actively to printmaking and drawing, pursuing a multifaceted form of expression through the differences in materials and techniques. This exhibition presents approximately 20 prints and drawings, drawn primarily from our gallery's collection. It offers a chance to experience the delicate colors and quiet atmosphere that Funakoshi achieved through his earnest engagement with the medium of printmaking, as well as the traces of contemplation embodied in his drawings. We warmly invite you to view the works.
